Summary

A Cinderella story with deadly stakes and thrilling twists。

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out。 But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune。 The catch? Avery has no idea why--or even who Tobias Hawthorne is。 To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch--and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes。

Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed。 This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions。 Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a con-woman, and he's determined to take her down。 His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved。 Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive。

Holy sh*t!!! I just finished this and I am in shock!! The first hundred pages were slow, but after that it took off。 I am completely engrossed in their world, and the ending! I didn’t see that coming! I can’t believe I have to wait until September for the next one!

Very cute。 Fun writing style, fun ideas。 I wanted to keep reading, although it wasn't too deep or believable。 I realized it was typing adult only after I was hooked on the story。 Very cute。 Fun writing style, fun ideas。 I wanted to keep reading, although it wasn't too deep or believable。 I realized it was typing adult only after I was hooked on the story。 。。。more

Really predictable and silly。 There is no way someone handed that kind of inheritance would make all the nonsense choices this protagonist does。

ok now this is some good YA fun。 puzzles? murder? a poor unknown girl getting a massive fortune in a mysterious will, while the deceased grandsons get nothing? a mansion with tunnels and secret passageways? this book has got them all。 I did not care about the love triangles between the main character and the grandsons。 did i read the whole thing in a night just bc i needed to know what happened though? yes

i honestly can’t write a good review on this bc it took me five thousands years to read it but i liked it! it was supposed to be a bit mysterious and i’m a bit upset it took me so long to read bc the ending probably would have affected me more。 also every time i picked up the book again i kind of forgot who some of the characters were but again, that’s on me lol。 i still think if i read this in a timely manner i would give it a 4/5 tho。。。 it’s a casual 4/5 i’d say!!not really that big of a commi i honestly can’t write a good review on this bc it took me five thousands years to read it but i liked it! it was supposed to be a bit mysterious and i’m a bit upset it took me so long to read bc the ending probably would have affected me more。 also every time i picked up the book again i kind of forgot who some of the characters were but again, that’s on me lol。 i still think if i read this in a timely manner i would give it a 4/5 tho。。。 it’s a casual 4/5 i’d say!!not really that big of a commitment to me but i would still recommend 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I finished this book in about two days。 I could not put it down。 It's fast paced and intriguing and you always want to know what happens next。 Now even though I really liked it, I give it four stars instead of five because I feel like Avery's character could have been fleshed out a bit more。 I like her interactions with the boys and the rest of the Hawthorne family。 They were written great。I also loved that book ends with its beginning。 I mean it started with her and Harry and ends with her and I finished this book in about two days。 I could not put it down。 It's fast paced and intriguing and you always want to know what happens next。 Now even though I really liked it, I give it four stars instead of five because I feel like Avery's character could have been fleshed out a bit more。 I like her interactions with the boys and the rest of the Hawthorne family。 They were written great。I also loved that book ends with its beginning。 I mean it started with her and Harry and ends with her and Harry who apparently is a Hawthorne。 I can't wait what the second book brings。 。。。more

This was so entertaining。 Very reminiscent of “The Westing Game,” one of my fave school reads from middle school。 Quite a bit of the dialogue felt awkward and the romance was a little forced, but pushing through was worth it for the twists and turns!

Soooo good! I could barely stand to put it down。 Initially, I thought it was another overused trope, but Barnes took it to another level and kept me guessing。

I wasn’t ready for this one to be over! Started slow, but I really enjoyed。

At first I was going to give it 4 stars, but a few hours after I finished reading the book, I was still thinking about the characters and the plot line。 The mystery is very intriguing, although its not overly fast paced。 The short chapters flow well making the story easy to read and build and loosen the tension when needed。 The characters: at first i'd thought it would be hard to remember all the characters and their qualities, with the 4 brothers and Avery as well as minor characters who featur At first I was going to give it 4 stars, but a few hours after I finished reading the book, I was still thinking about the characters and the plot line。 The mystery is very intriguing, although its not overly fast paced。 The short chapters flow well making the story easy to read and build and loosen the tension when needed。 The characters: at first i'd thought it would be hard to remember all the characters and their qualities, with the 4 brothers and Avery as well as minor characters who feature a lot。 However, after a few chapters it really started to flow and the characters appeared natural, and unique, so they started to stand out from each other instead of blending in like at the beginning。 I thought I would find Avery annoying as sometimes the authors thoughts for the teenage female character surrounded by boys can be repetitive and predictive however, this was not the case。 Avery was actually quite realistic and not "over done" which definitely shaped the book。 The romance was light and not stupid or really a main feature which I enjoyed。 There is a small love triangle but it doesn't play a huge part in the plot or it doesn't become repetitive or tiresome。 I enjoyed this since if anything it helped understand the characters mind set and more about how they acted and behaved as well as pushing the story along。 Overall, its a brilliant mystery and the characters are very interesting。 Not much of it is predictable like with many mysteries, although I did see one part coming。 5/5!😀 。。。more

Like Knives Out meets the Westing Game。 Lots of fun and compulsively readable。

Sydney

Oooh, this was a delightfully fast-paced read! Its comparison to Knives Out was for sure a draw for me because that movie is incredible。 I loved all the puzzles in this and how everything was gradually revealed。 Also, Avery was wonderfully unique, at least with her interests in statistics。 It was the perfect length for an engrossing story that also leads perfectly into a sequel ;)。 I do always love books that you end up reading in just a few hours because you’re just so enraptured with it。

Hannah Gines

This book was written amazingly。 The author fed us questions from the very beginning。 As some got answered, more would be introduced。 I was drawn in by the romance and banter as well as the mystery that was maintained up until the very end。 The characters were so well written I feel like I could sit down and have a conversation with them。 This book was crazy addictive and I would have read it in one sitting if I had had the time。 Can’t wait for the next book to come out in September!

Kirsten

I’ve been in a reading slump for weeks but this book sucked me in from the start。 Mystery, puzzles, a vast fortune, some cute but complicated brothers, and a resourceful young woman all add up to a very fun read。 Now I’m dying for book two。
